Electrolytes: what they're for, and when to take them when you train

Comprimé d'électrolytes effervescent se dissolvant dans un verre d'eau

You sweat, you drink water, and yet you feel drained after the big sessions? You may be missing a piece of the puzzle: electrolytes. Here's what they are, what they do, and in which situations they're genuinely useful.

What are electrolytes?

They are electrically charged minerals, essential to the exchanges between your cells: sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride. They drive hydration, muscle contraction and nerve transmission. When you sweat, you don't just lose water — you also lose these minerals.

What the science says (the regulated version)

  • Magnesium contributes to normal electrolyte balance, normal muscle function and to reducing tiredness.
  • Potassium contributes to normal muscle function and to the normal functioning of the nervous system.
  • Calcium contributes to normal energy metabolism.

When are electrolytes useful?

  • Long or intense sessions (over an hour, sustained cardio, circuits).
  • Heat: in summer, sweating soars — and your mineral losses with it.
  • Heavy sweaters: if your t-shirt has white salt marks after the session, that's a telling sign.
  • Repeated training: several sessions a week without time to recharge through food.

For a 30-minute walk, water is enough. It's the build-up of effort + duration + heat that makes recharging minerals relevant.

Water alone vs water + electrolytes

Drinking lots of plain water after a big sweat loss dilutes the remaining minerals further. It's the classic trap of "quantity without quality" hydration. An electrolyte intake supports rehydration — either through food (banana, dried fruit, mineralised waters), or through a supplement that's simple to dose.

The smart format: the tablet

Our Electrolyte Complex brings together the 5 essential minerals in a tablet, sugar-free and vegan — to slip into your gym bag, no powder to measure or sugary drink. 2 tablets per day with a large glass of water, on the days that count.

Key takeaways

  • Sweating = losing water AND minerals.
  • Useful mainly for: long efforts, heat, heavy sweating.
  • Magnesium contributes to reducing tiredness and to electrolyte balance.

Find the Electrolyte Complex in the Trisbulkup Stack (-15% with code TRISBULKUP) or in the Performance & Muscle range.

Food supplement — does not replace a varied, balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle.
